It was a 6 pm on a Tuesday. I was watching T.V. My stomach starting making whale noises, it was quite annoying. No amount of ignoring, or shushing would quiet my stomach. I decided to make a grilled cheese sandwich, but not a real one, a really lazy grilled cheese sandwich; the kind of grilled cheese sandwich where you pop it in the toaster. I got my whole wheat bread, two slices of cheddar cheese, and popped them two slices of bread into the toaster. I turned the dial. I turn around to look at the TV. I turn back and the toaster is on fire. Real live red and orange flames scorching the inside and licking up the sides of the toaster door. I was about to sling my sister over my shoulder and sprint out of the house, when my mom calmly unplugged the toaster and started laughing and jokingly said “ha tnfa3e.” That’s an Arabic saying that’s said to women about how well suited for marriage they are.
Egyptian women are expected to cook, clean, and care for the children as a trade off for that pretty jewelry set (they don’t do diamond rings in Egypt). One of my teachers once told me, “You’re a feminist in a culture that doesn’t appreciate feminism.” Probably one of the most accurate statements I’ve heard about Egyptian culture. And this lack of appreciation of feminism is prevalent in Egyptian Communities regardless of religion. Even though most Coptic Christians won’t admit the misogynistic accepts of the religion.
Here’s why women settle from my perspective as a Coptic (another word for Egyptian) Christian woman:
The best part is when I told some of the girls in church how ridiculous these teachings are, they told me they agreed with all of it and that I should talk to the priest. Wake up! These teachings are misogyny. They’re sexist, archaic, and are used as a tool of subjugation.
You do not need to become a maid. It is not your job. It is not one of your womanly duties. If you want to cook and clean that’s your choice, not a requirement of marriage. You do not give in to your husband; he is not worth more than you are. You do not need to silently put up with abuse. Do not stay in a marriage where you are not respected and treated as an equal just because of culture, tradition, or religion. Give a metaphorical middle finger to any ideology that puts you in a position of inferiority. Hold these men to a higher standard. Once they see that you won’t put up with their domineering, disrespectful behavior they’ll shape up. And if they don’t, as they say, “el baab byfawot gamal,” which is an Egyptian saying that translates to “the door is wide enough to have a camel pass through.” It’s the equivalent of the English, “there’s the door, baby”. You are not like your grandmothers. You are educated and independent; you don’t need the economic support of a man. You do not answer to anybody but yourself. Take control of you own life. Your opinions and voice are just as important as any man’s and don’t let them tell you otherwise. Demand your rights. Make noise and fight for your presence in the new government, this is your chance to take control of yourselves. Don’t wait and say, “we’re not important, we’ll wait until the country calms down.” No, you are important and you will not wait. You’ve been waiting for hundreds of years already. Egypt has such a rich history of powerful women. Look at them as your role models. Friday Favorites
How did that happen?! She’s growing up so fast. Splash. (That’s the sound of my tear drop hitting the keyboard.) Although I already miss the days of a tiny little Quinn cuddling in my arms, I must say, I really love watching her grow. I think my heart grows a little each time she laughs or smiles What a joy she is.
Aside from celebrating, I’m not sure what the plan is for the weekend. The laundry is done, house is pretty much clean, and the Christmas decorations are put away (splash. another tear drop). Wait, let me savor this moment. Why is it that a clean house only lasts for like 5 minutes? Such is life. :)

Now before I launch into this, allow me to say that the bathroom renovation is chugging along and we’re so close to the end. I am unbelievably excited to show you where we are with it, but alas, you must be patient as we put the finishing touches on the throne room (yeah, I said it). She will be revealed shortly.
I am personally a fan of what I like to call “shotgun method gifting.” Anyone familiar with firearms knows that what makes a shotgun a lovely instrument is the fact that its shell consists of many tiny pieces of shrapnel. If you can get the bullet in the heart or the head, well then presto! That being said, when I say that my gifting style is “shotgun method,” what I mean is that I like to put together several small gifts when I’m unsure. While not everything is guaranteed to “hit,” there’s a good chance that at least one or more will. You see where I’m coming from now? I knew you’d like that analogy.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
Life has been so good, and busy, lately and there just hasn’t been time to blog. So a quick recap.
We have moved into our house. We love our house. Our clothes are not in boxes, but in dressers. Our books are on shelves. Our dishes are in cabinets. Our pantry still needs to be put in order… but everything else is good!
I left work early on December 23, and we took off to Virginia Beach. After a 3 hour frantic search in the greater area of Virginia Beach for a specific toy, on behalf of Josh’s uncle, we got to the Sims house. True story: I almost punched a grown man, with a beard, employed by Toys R Us who informed us that they did have the specific toy we were looking for… but HE PURCHASED THE LAST ONE. This entire experience was new for me. I’ve been one to have my Christmas shopping done in advance, and have never been out at the last second looking for ONE specific thing. I feel like Josh and I have learned a valuable lesson… keep doing things ahead of time. Hehe. No, we didn’t find the toy… but I feel like the toy that ended up being purchased was even cooler. And yes, I referred to the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie about a million times during our search.
Christmas Eve, I experienced my first Sims Christmas ever. It was SO fun. Huge breakfast, lots of presents, lots of laughter. Christmas was so exciting. My family doesn’t have the excitement over toys, and bubbling about what Santa (or Tinsel) brought them. Josh’s family does.
Going into Christmas this year was difficult because I have been feeling the stress of work, rather than the magic of the holiday… and the excitement of the little girls was not overwhelming, but refreshing. (Except for the fact that they woke us up before 6:30 on Christmas… that was exhausting.) I got things that I wanted, and things that I needed… a crock pot, a book of sewing patterns, a rain coat, sweater, jewelry, pictures, etc… honestly, what meant the most is realizing-again- that they really are my family. I’m so thankful for the way they have all loved and accepted me. This was probably the weirdest, but most wonderful part: it was strange not being with my family, but I didn’t miss it too much… because I felt like I WAS with family.
We went to the Christmas Eve service, went to the house in NC, and ended up exchanging gifts between siblings. My favorite thing was from Kaity– she gave each of her sisters a framed picture with a quote from Little Women: “I could never love anyone as much as I love my sisters.” – Jo March
Well, basically I wanted to burst into tears because it meant so much to me. I’m so very thankful for such wonderful sisters.

Friday Fun
First, some thoughts on the verse of the week, Acts 17:24-25. I’ve really enjoyed memorizing and meditating on these words. First of all, it’s been a daily reminder that I have a creator who is powerful and sovereign. Also, in my Bible study we are looking at the life of Moses, and just finished reading about the building of the tabernacle. This was where God literally dwelt in the midst of his people in the time of Exodus, but the Acts verse (“he does not live in temples built by hands”) reminds me that now God’s Spirit lives in the hearts of his people because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It’s because of God’s love and grace that I can experience his presence! And when I read “he is not served by human hands as if he needed anything” I am taken back to the idea of humility. I don’t bring anything to the table for God. He doesn’t need me, but he loves me and allows me to participate in his work. Like a mother with her child in the kitchen, he lets me “help,” even when all I do sometimes is lick the spoon.
Now for the fun-fun:
A nail polish tutorial. I thought I would share this, because every time I go to Pinterest I get a notification that someone else has repinned it. And it is pretty good! I would agree with Karen that the key to a perfect home manicure is practice. I have some other nail tips on my beauty board.
Statement jewelry. I bought this fun ring with my Christmas money, and am looking for an occasion to wear it. It looks so cool and funky, but it is seriously giant, although in the best way. Shipping was fast. I recommend.

The sizes of tapers are called guage. 22 guage is the smallest I know, that is about 0.5 mm. The higher number of guage the thinner is the taper, the lower number of guage the thicker is the taper.
On the picture above you might see some long tools with spiral paint in purple, green and blue, those tools are called tapers, which is the stretching tools. The black tool (jewelry) is called a tunnel, those are for the lower guage (the thicker tapers). The white tools in the back is called plugs, those are for ANY tapers, they don’t have the hole in the middle like to tunnels.

Ever since I was a little girl, the Orthodox Christmas has just been the same ol’ thing. You wake up on the 6th of January, take care of any business you need to during the day, then get ready for church at night. The next day, we don’t go to school or work and we spend the day with our families. This is a special occasion for many reasons. For one, it’s the day we (the Orthodox churches) recognize our Savior Jesus’s birth. It is for this reason that we go out, buy an extravagant dress for ladies, suit and tie for men (think fancy wedding apparel), buy new shoes, jewelry, etc. We dawn our new apparel the night of the sixth and head off to church for a special service commemorating His birth. Even the priest has his own special attire for the occasion.
This year, the Orthodox Christmas meant a little more to me than it did before. I used to think I went to church looking as elegant as I could to impress my friends and family, but I was wrong. It is more than that. Yes, we see the church as the house of God, so we must look our very best, especially if we are attending a service commemorating his birth, but what does it all mean? Standing in that church, I saw several things. One, it was crowded. There was hardly anywhere to sit, but that is to be expected because so many people only come to church only on our Christmas and Easter services. Two, the church was decorated in pure white flowers. They were hung up in front of the altar, and around the icons of the saints, as well. Aside from all of that, the real difference I felt was inside. I felt a sort of calmness that I haven’t felt in a long time. I’ll admit, I’ve strayed away from the church and I haven’t really been the same since, but being there, I felt that all my stress, worries, and angst has been lifted off my shoulders. It was also great just being able to pray around my friends and family, the fact that we all came together for one reason.
Of course, most cultures that celebrate certain customs always have traditional foods that they eat, just for the event. The Coptic Orthodox Christmas is no different. We have dishes such as wara anab, which is rice and beef wrapped in grape leaves and steamed with cloves of garlic. This is similar to the Greek version of dolmades, except not vegetarian and cooked. Another dish that we have is a soup of beefy broth with chunks of beef in it. It is served with white rice and fatta, which is baked pita bread. It becomes “fatta” when soaked in the soup. The Copts also eat a popular dish called “kibda” which is liver cooked over a fire with jalapeños and other spices. Aside from all of these popular Egyptian dishes, we also serve feta cheese, basturma, and mortadella on the side. After fasting for forty days, being vegan and being able to eat fish only, coming home from church to a feast is probably one of the most traditional parts of this holiday. It certainly gives the day a great end, considering we all sleep like babies after.
This year was definitely a great one, and I’m excited for Easter especially since the customs are slightly different, and my mom said she’d teach me how to cook this different traditional dishes! Stay tuned, loves! And Merry Christmas from me to you.

I leave for London in 15 short days where I will spend the next few months studying and traveling throughout Europe. I have spent countless hours looking for packing lists and other advice on Pinterest so I decided to share what I learned with all of you!

People told me the day would come when it would be comfortable for me. I would think to myself …not me. I will never be okay talking to strangers. Alas, they were right. Although I don’t “shake my money maker” or “use what God gave me” to sell my jewelry, I don’t avoid eye contact and customary greetings. I didn’t read a book or take a class to become more outgoing. Experience is always going to be the best teacher, and thankfully I became less socially awkward as time went on.
I really do like to remember that show. The booth looked like a garage sale, the people where strange, and we were unprepared to handle the entire situation. The progress that has been made on all fronts is satisfying. So my first show taught me at least two things…progress not perfection, and you can’t always trust advice from old people.
Whatever your endeavors are for this new year….hang in there!

Little brother Neal, 10 years my junior, was born just in time for me to give up being the son my folks so wanted and become a girl. He lives in Nairobi, has been a venture capitalist all over Africa for many years, married, has a home in south France to which he soon expects to retire. Now visiting London for his godson’s* wedding, he and his Finnish wife Pirkko are invited to the soiree at the University Club, as well as the dinner at the Lessings’ home. I’ve visited him a few times in Africa but it has been ages since we’ve seen each other. Last time was when Kami and I were in London and joined him or the Queen’s Club Tennis tournament.
Back at the Castle,( keeding!) “Hold the Date” boxes were mailed: lovely packaging, even the stamps were beauties. Inside were swivels of white paper (snow) and M and M’s smiling faces in ski gear asking you to hold the date on what looked like (and was) a three-day pass for skiing. It also gave their website, which was another surprise! Go on MELEANDMIKE.COM and see for yourself: delightful pictures, graphics, and all the info you would need to be in Aspen in January. Very classy, indeed.
Meanwhile, I still don’t have the right shoes, and my jewelry needs cleaning. I’ve made appointments with several of my many docs including my dentist and dermatologist, and have scheduled a facial, haircut, mani’s and peddie’s. I also made a change in my will, and got my college ring fixed……..things I was going to do ‘some day’. I still have to order leis, pick up alterations, have a blood test & do seemingly a million other this and that’s before leaving. And I promised myself I’d do yoga daily and drink lots of water and swim the length of the pool every day til we go……so far (two weeks out) I’ve kept my promise.
Oh yes, the wedding dress! No details yet, except off-white. No bridesmaids. Having attended Mele’s college graduation, I’d guess she has so many women friends she couldn’t choose. And it will take 5 months to create. She will also be wearing a couture label at the University Club official engagement party in September, also off- white. Connie, Kami and I are still talking about what to wear to which events; we all agree underdressing is best, however, on the other hand….…it’s a chance to really dress up, get fancy again, give those vagabond shoes a chance to dance in the Big Apple! At my age, it’s my swan song, so why not splurge, spend some of that principal on something besides college tuition, family gatherings and furniture. Easily enough, I talked myself into totally undoing the purse strings and spending like I’ve never spent before; oblivious to price, if I wanted it, I got it. ‘Once in a lifetime,’ remember? So we decided dressing up would be totally appropriate for the bride’s family and Connie will go long. Kami may do cocktail length, what I wear depends on getting the right shoes.

I have been a bridesmaid for many weddings. I now am able to offer some advice to anyone who is a first time bridesmaid and the do’s, don’ts of this special, honored tradition.
Consider Your Duties.
Always make sure you are able to attend all the wedding related events, and be there early to offer your assistance. For instance, attend the engagement party, stock the bar party, bridal shower, bachelorette party, rehearsal, and rehearsal dinner. Also, you will need to make the appointments for all wedding dress and bridesmaid dress shopping trips and fittings. Being part of the shopping will help the bride decide what you will be wearing on the wedding day: the bridesmaids dress, jewelry, shoes, hairstyles, etc.
On the day of the wedding, your duties include helping the bride get dressed and prepare on her special day, and help carry the train of the bride’s wedding gown and keep track of her bouquet.
There are Some Financial Obligations You Will Incur.
• Assisting the maid of honor in planning the bridal shower and bachelorette party and help pay for it. Depending what is planned, sharing the cost around the bridesmaids group will make it easier for all to afford.
• Purchase a wedding gift for the bride and groom.
• You may also need to buy your own bridesmaid dress and shoes.
You Are There To Help The Bride.
Always inquire about any tasks that you can volunteer for that will help everyone in the wedding party out. You can help to find a florist and assist the bride in choosing flowers and center pieces. Give creative ideas for locations on a venue, research and interview an amazing photographer, present affordable honeymoon package options, and assist picking beautiful wedding invitations. Introduction
Esha was adopted from Chennai, South India, to live in the UK with a wealthy family of land owners. Her parents who used to operate a jewelry shop, were killed in a fire, when dacoits plundered their house to steal the more costly gold and silver jewelry they kept hidden for posterity. Luckily, her name was entered in the same bank account as her parents, to inherit whatever fortune incurred as a result of her parents lucrative business.

The dacoits had forced their way into their home in the night, when Esha was returning from a drama play enacted at her teacher’s house. On her way home, which is normally a safe and quiet route, along a narrow pathway near the ocean, she was attacked by two young men who, with a knife to her throat, defiled her purity in the most indelible manner. Stripped naked and tied to a tree, she was left bleeding and half conscious, after the harrowing ordeal of the rape attack.
Their Āyurvedic family doctor found her in the morning, when on his way, going the same path to join them for the morning Aortika or service, at the local Jagannātha temple. He was told of the remains by the family’s regular rikshaw driver, on his way back home with devastated heart, of what was once the sacred home of the Hoques. He would normally cycle them all to the temple. Double stupefied, he helped the doctor with Esha to the hospital.

Her parents who used to operate a jewelry shop, were killed in a fire, when dacoits plundered their house to steal the more costly gold and silver jewelry they kept hidden for posterity. Luckily, her name was entered in the same bank account as her parents, to inherit whatever fortune incurred as a result of her parents lucrative business.
Her mother and father who were from Rishikesh, near the foothills of the Himalayas, were Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa worshipers; vegetarians who used to keep a few cows as part of their inherent duty, thought her the meaning of life. They were very pious and generous people, always giving in charity. Their family business brought them to settle in Chennai where Esha was attending school, learning French and English. She wanted to be a teacher of Āyurveda.
The dacoits had forced their way into their home in the night, when Esha was returning from a drama play enacted at her teacher’s house. On her way home, which is normally a safe and quiet route, along a narrow pathway near the ocean, she was attacked by two young men who, with a knife to her throat, defiled her purity in the most indelible manner. Stripped naked and tied to a tree, she was left bleeding and half conscious, after the harrowing ordeal of the rape attack.
Their Āyurvedic family doctor found her in the morning, when on his way, going the same path to join them for the morning Aortika or service, at the local Jagannātha temple. He was told of the remains by the family’s regular rikshaw driver, on his way back home with devastated heart, of what was once the sacred home of the Hoques. He would normally cycle them all to the temple. Double stupefied, he helped the doctor with Esha to the hospital.
