Terri Sanford: Untamed Beauty

Walking into Karma Boutique in Nashville is like walking into another world. As you walk owner operator, Terri Sanford, offers a warm greeting and Iggy, her dog, rushes to the door. Sanford is not a Nashville Native, but has made it her home for the past 30 years. “My husband found a job here. Of course I came, but I think I was ready for something different,” she shares. At the time Sanford worked at a chain retail store, while designing and crafting jewelry in her spare time. She worked for another retailer in Nashville when she arrived, but left due to differences.
After leaving her job, Sanford spent a period of time not working, but creating. Sanford was gifted a sizable amount of sewing equipment. “I am one of those people who stubborn and eager to learn new things. I taught myself to sew and began making everything. It’s still not perfect, but I love it,” Sanford says pointing to the paisley purple and turquoise blouse. In July 1990, Karma Boutique was established.
The clothing that Terri Sanford creates is heavily inspired by her love of 70’s rock and all things Stevie Nicks. This is clear by the fringe, lace, vintage cash register, and prized picture of herself with her idol. She gleamed with pride recalling taking that picture in her store. The patterns on the clothing are as unflinchingly conspicuous as the designer. Sanford’s style appears effortless. Imagine the edgy alternative girl that makes bed head something to aspire to. Her clothing offers a wild bohemian image.

Karma sells women’s apparel and accessories, but there are two things that really set the store apart from others in the area. The majority of the clothing was handmade by Sanford, and the eclectic clothing is starkly juxtaposed against a honky-tonk background. If you look out the window it is not uncommon to see a herd of cowboy’s walking by without a glance. “I used to get a lot more traffic down here, especially during First Saturday, before they closed the gallery,” says Sanford.
On the first Saturday of every month Nashville hosts an art crawl. The galleries along 5th and Broadway open there doors to the public. Local talent is highlighted, and the cowboy hats are overrun by cocktail dresses. Though most of the galleries with exhibits can be found on 5th avenue a few more are scattered around downtown. Karma Boutique is only open on the weekends, Friday through Sunday. A surge in business occurred at the beginning of every month when there was till a gallery two businesses down. “During First Saturday, I put everything on sale. 30 percent off of everything in the store, but no one from the art crawl takes advantage,” she explains.
Sanford’s passion is making clothes. She takes great pleasure in seeing people enjoy her creations. At Karma Boutique there is a bartering system. She explains why she is so open to the idea, “I realize that the people who enjoy my clothes may be, well broke.” Sanford experimented with selling her clothing at music and arts festivals, where trading is customary. Sanford loudly exclaims, “Sometimes I got something you want, and you got beads [for jewelry] or something. We may never see each other again, so we gotta work something out.” Sanford is willing to swap items in order to continue creating new things.

An artist and designer that is often featured in Karma along side its owner is Dana Janell. Dana designs some women’s apparel, but is known for her eccentric bow tie designs. “Terri works so hard,” says Janell, “She is the only one who works in the store, and creates the majority of the inventory.” Janell has been selling her bow ties in the shop for the past three years. She enjoys Sanford’s lively personality, and her passion for art.
Karma Boutique has had a few homes in Nashville. Sanford has been forced to relocate in order to avoid rent hikes in prior buildings. The store has been in the current location for 4 years. “I am surprised really that the store has made it this long. I just wanted a place to share my work,” she says, “Even after the doors close I will never be able to stop sewing.” Karma’s creator laughs as she describes a world where she designs clothing and accessories even if she just stacks them in her home.
This weekend March 7th there will be another art crawl in downtown Nashville. Once again the streets will be filled with artists, and others seeking culture in the home of country music. Terri Sanford will be opening her doors at 3pm. Take a moment and step through the wormhole. Trade in the banjos, and smell of leather; for classic rock, and lavender incense wafting through the air. Visit Karma, and meet Terri Sanford.

Got into Nairobi from Jinja by bus (~13hrs). An hr before boarding, realized that I’d lost my glasses, probably at the whitewater rafting house. So I took off my contacts before getting on this overnight bus.
A few hours later, I woke up to shuffling as people hurried off the bus. I followed them to the Uganda-Kenya border immigration office. Due to a misunderstanding, I was slow to get cleared from the Uganda side. The bus conductor had to find me well after every other passenger had gotten cleared on the Kenya side, and escorted my blind self by the hand across the border. I felt like a child and as if an unsolicited bromance moment had just passed.
DAY 5 (3.4 Wed)
[10:15am] arrived in Nairobi to one of the bus terminals of CBD (central business district). Headed straight for an internet cafe to find lodging for the night.
Many hours and several misdirected bus transfers later, I made my way to Milimani Hostel which I was pissed to find out was very far from city center. On the plus side, the place was sweet, hot shower, I had the dorm room all to myself, fast wifi, and nice fellow guests (2 Dutch boys and a New Zealand couple).
DAY 6 (3.5 Thurs)
The frustration of the hostel location actually turned out to be a good thing. I searched online for things around the area, and there is the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage.
I checked out of the hostel and saw the following:
DSC00122 DSC00076 DSC00082 DSC00093 DSC00117 DSC00121
29 elephants total. all orphaned. usually by death of their poached mothers.
The rest of the day was followed by:
  • Bomas of Kenya – outdoor exhibition of traditional Kenyan homes by tribe, followed by a series of traditional Kenyan dances, instrument, and song.
  • new hostel – tracked down a different hostel, this one in the heart of Westlands (hotspot for Nairobi nightlife and a hangout of many expats). On arrival, the hostel managers were like “are you sure you want to stay here. is this ok?” Turns out that my google map search led to a hostel primarily tailored for local university students, not tourists. all the better! In the last few days, I’ve gotten to know some students from Nairobi Institute of Technology, all studying architecture. The hostel has native Kenyans, but also students from Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and DRC to name a few. The hostel also hosts nocturnal guests which scurry into the shadows when they hear footsteps but leave the compound without fail by sunrise. The boys in the 4 person share each pay 7500 Kenyan shillings a month (1 USD ~ 90 KSh)! I’m paying 500 KSh/night since I’m a foreigner, but it still beats the price of any tourist-tailored housing in this expensive part of the city. This morning, I joined many of the boys in doing laundry. I still suck at hand laundry.DSC00184
  • most of the rooms are 4 person shares, but I am in a 2 person share with a man in his 40’s who’s here temporarily until he finds permanent housing. He’s a casino pit boss who was recently transferred from his hometown close to Mombasa. I wake up 6am everyday to unlock our door and let him in since he works nights.
OTHER NAIROBI HAPPENINGS:
  • Kibera slums – the biggest slum in East Africa (1.2 million residents). Went on a guided tour by a local who grew up in the slums. We went to various grassroots organizations in the slum (women empowerment group, jewelry making using animal bones, a primary school).
  • Westlands nightlife – my first ever club experience was in Nairobi. I went to Molly’s (a bar/club frequented mostly by locals) with my hostel managers the first night, but then went to 4 more the next night. Verdict: not a fan.
Plan is to take the Nairobi-Mombasa train on Monday evening.

Do you know that urge for wearing certain items after a shopping spree? Well, that’s what I experienced last time after shopping this cute skirt! I decided that I wanted to wear it to a friend in Nijmegen (because I just couldn’t wait to wear it). The only downside was the fact that it was february hahaha oh gosh not even close to summer. Ofcourse there was no sun at all and this dark day started as usual in this rainy country : yess… with a lot of rain ! (pff)
But in the afternoon the weather turned really good and we decided to shoot this photos which turned out much better than expected!
And what about this location? Pretty cool right?! But OH MY … it was SCARY! The water flowed really really fast under my feed and it was very windy! I was relieved back on the top of the embankment haha.
As I told you earlier, I don’t stick to one certain style. It depends on my mood if I feel like wearing something chic, like high heels and a classy coat , or a more grungy look, with my sneakers and a jacket. But there’s definitely one thing in all my outfits : they’re quite basic (You probably know already I love to wear basic colors; black, white and grey are always good!) But I often add a little touch. Sometimes with a colored item, like this plum purple circle skirt, or I bright it up with some accessories. The outfit on these pictures for example, is very simple, it’s nothing more than a cute skirt, fluffiness, a little neacklace and a smile ofcourse (You’re never fully dressed without a smile!). But the pattern/print of the skirt and the fluffiness of the swetaer make it a little more special, I think. What about you?? So a pretty playful and girly outfit for today! Do you like this look on me?
Also, have you noticed the necklace I’m wearing? When it comes to jewelry I’m not that kinda girl wearing as much bracelets on each arm as possible. I only wear a few basic pieces, like my Cluse watch and a little necklace, oh and my all time favorite rings. Most of my jewels are really special to me, especially my necklaces, since there’s a story behind almost each one of my necklaces. I told you some before about my swallow necklace which I bought after the break-up with my boyfriend as a symbol of freedom. Oh and I told you about my self made necklace with the engagement from my parents and an old coin that I got from my grandfather. So I thought it would be fun to tell you the story behind this necklace too.
As you may have read in one of my previous posts ‘talking about time’ I’ve made a new start. And when I was shopping on my own a couple of weeks ago in Amsterdam, I really felt like I wanted something for the new me, like a symbol or something that reminds me of this new start and that’ll give me strength and hope but also joy and happiness when I’m wearing and looking at it. And then I saw this one and I immediatly knew this one was IT! I needed this one…it’s the perfect necklace as a symbol of my new start. As you can see on the photo it’s a circle with some relief just like life…there’s no end…but every end is a new beginning. It’s a circle of hard times and good times, happiness and sadness. And the relief (the hard times and your struggles) make you stronger in the end. What do you think about this look and my new necklace? I’d love to hear!
Okay, I’m off to the gym now. BUT I’ve so many exciting things to tell you, almost can’t wait to tell you all.  I can tell you one thing already: There will be soon a really cool giveaway online!! So keep an eye on the blog and my Instagram page!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Lots of Love, Suzanne
