VIVE LA FANDOM – Why Fandoms Save The Internet

Fandoms are a hub of creativity and expression, from fanfiction, fanart and cosplay. It is pure reimaginiation and expansion of exisiting characters, pure madness and indulgence, and I LOVE IT. They are so inspired, they develop the world’s of their favourite TV or book series into something the author didn’t even expect or imagine. Characters and ideas no longer belong solely to their creator but now belong to anyone who loves them, this is brilliant for creative expression and exploration. One thing I learnt in Art School is that work is so much better when discussed and developed with fellow artists.
I find it so encouraging that so many people care about stories and ideas, that their emotional capacity is so large, that they devote so much time to exploring and developing characters. People in fandoms seriously care whether their favourite characters are happy, whether they fall in love with their soul mate. This is so important and it makes me so happy that it’s happening on such a huge scale.
The fandom community is something we should all admire as well, mostly it is supportive and loving of the work of each of it’s members. Tumblr is alive with reblogs of fanfiction and fanart. I am not ignoring the quibbles of ship wars, but the majority of people just love talking about their fandom and sharing their love. This supportive atmosphere makes the internet such a better place, becasue you know whatever TV or book series you love, there will always be someone else you can talk to to obsess over it together.
I think Fandoms have saved the interent with the creativity, care and community that they engender. So get involved and get kitted out, check out our collection of Fandom T-Shirts, Fandom Sweatshirts and Fandom Vests.
