Nicole Kidman in state of Grace

The long-awaited Grace of Monacorecently made its debut in the Philippine cinema. The film stars the Academy award winning actress Nicole Kidman as the late Hollywood actress turned Princess Grace Kelly and Tim Roth as Prince Rainier III. The story is largely set in the early 1960s. Inside the palace walls, Princess Grace is feeling neglected and unhappy. There’s a large part of her that desires to act again. Alfred Hitchcock has offered her to star in his film “Marnie”. Meanwhile, Rainier is preoccupied with French efforts to end Monaco’s status as a tax haven.
The film has been confounded by Grace Kelly’s family and has also been panned since. I have seen it twice and it’s not as bad as the critics says. In fact, I am captivated by this film not just because of Nicole Kidman’s brilliant acting as Grace Kelly but also the complete aspect of the film.
Early on the movie Grace Kelly declares that the idea of her life as a fairy tale is itself a fairy tale. As stated by the French director Olivier Dahan, it is not a biopic movie because he hates biopics in general rather than a fiction movie based on real events. I suppose the major problem of the film is Arash Amel’s script because the Monaco’s royal family is extremely blunt in voicing their disgust at the story. Too much undesirably criticism has been said about and I’m going to leave that all behind.
Nicole Kidman outshines in portraying Grace Kelly in which she is called on to project glamour and misery in the same extent. She is known to be a researcher when it comes to giving life her starring roles. She is undeniably a perfect physical match for Grace Kelly. In several scenes we didn’t need to hear a dialogue, all we need is Nicole’s face. Olivier Dahan seems to be expert in the power of close-up shots. Frequently as possible, the camera is always on Nicole Kidman’s face. Her features, which really rules the big screen, are remotely more expressive than the other characters often common words say.
Some of the biggest names in fashion industry like Chanel and Dior did a number of costumes in the film. It’s every girls dream to throw their self into the fancy dress box and transform as a Princess. In this movie production, Nicole makes full use of the costume department. The costume designers are remarkable for they re-created the looks from the style icons wardrobe. The result is impressive because they got the princess look just right.  Aside from fancy costumes, glittering jewelries provided by Cartier and Swarovski was a complete delight in the eyes. It is the core of Grace Kelly’s wardrobe.
I also want to praise the ambiance of the film. I can’t help but to be overwhelmed by the overall atmosphere of the film. The big wide-ranging shots capturing elegant cars, impressive aerial shots of boats and casinos. The scenery in which the drama caught between high hills and blue sea catches the beauty of Monaco.
