The Wizard Of Oz

In the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz I believe the way they did the lighting throughout the movie was done in a very good way that expressed the tone throughout the movie. This movie went from a black and white movie to a movie that starts in sepia color to bright coloring and lighting along the way. When creating this movie, they knew they would have to produce massive lighting.
During the beginning of the movie, it starts out in a very low lighting with the color being sepia. It corresponds well to the beginning of the movie, because a tornado is about to come through the town and usually when it is stormy and tornados come through it is very dark and drowsy. It also was more of a sad time because Dorothy was fighting to get her dog Toto back and that is not a happy scene.
As the movie progresses on and she enters munchkin land, the movie brightens up and a lot of color and lightening come into play in the movie. The style of lighting used is high-key lighting. This style of lighting is typical of comedies, happy scenes, institutional and office scenes, and the like (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). The choosing of the lighting from munchkin land to emerald city was a good choice because it gave the audience the feel of happiness and character. When the part of the movie came on when they were at the wicked witch castle and the flying monkeys, they used a very low and dark lighting which corresponded well because that was a scary place to be and there was nothing good happening there.
I think if they would have changed the lighting at all in any of the senses than they movie may have been played out differently and maybe the viewers would not have felt the mood and tone that the director was trying to portray. I believe they did a very good job with the way the movie was completed.
