Mandala “Divine Energy and Grace”

This mandala was a gift to my friend Michele Mattie and her wonderful staff at Yoga4Yu.  It was begun the first week of October and completed in December.  Like most mandalas it is a symbolic representation of the universe.  The beautiful yogi in the center is seated in a white lotus, the symbol of divine energy and grace.  This is the same position of Brahma, the creator god in Hindu scripture.  Brahma sits on a lotus that grows from the navel of Vishnu as he sleeps on the cosmic ocean.  The symbolic meaning is that she, like all yogis is the “creator” of her own world.  She is dressed simply with only two adornments.  On her right arm is a silver bracelet, a symbol of purity and inner wisdom.  She also wears a single earring with a red gemstone that symbolizes compassion.  Surrounding her are eight lotus flowers.  The four pink lotus blooms are represented realistically.  Their pink color is the symbolic color of the Buddha.  The petals of these lotus flowers are tipped with red, another reminder to give compassion to all living beings.  The four stylized lotus flowers are purple, the color of mysticism.  They are placed at the cardinal points of the circle to symbolize love and compassion flowing out in all directions.  The uppermost contains the Mandarin character for the universe.  This character is incorporated in the Yoga4Yu logo.  Clockwise from it are three representations of the word AUM, the symbolic sound of the creation of the universe.  The first is Tibetan, the second is Devanagari or Sanskrit and the third is Tamil.  Connecting the lotus flowers are two jade rings with copper veins.  Jade is a sacred stone, named Yu in Mandarin, meaning “the link between heaven and earth”.  The copper in the jade rings, symbols and the outermost ring symbolizes feminine beauty, artistic creativity and balance.  It is a metal ruled by the planet Venus, depicted in the top right.  Finally, all the symbols and figure are set against the starry background of our home galaxy, the Milky Way.
