My earliest memory of Oklahoma is the rich hue of red and brown that flew past the U-haul window when my parents were moving us from Tulsa to live with my aunt and uncle in Cave Junction, Oregon. I don’t remember anything about Cave Junction. I think I used to, but those thoughts have faded. I have just a memory of a memory now, something about Christmas presents and a crying fit when my cousin Tami got a doll I believed should have gone to me. But that could have been a Grants Pass memory. I’m no longer sure which Oregon memory it is, but I do remember Oklahoma.
I remember looking outside the window and asking my mother what all that red was. “It’s dirt, honey,” she said, “and we won’t have to see any of it ever again.” Turns out, there are lots of states in America where the dirt is red, so that’s not entirely true, but there were definitely things left behind in Oklahoma.
I remember chickens and a pair of overalls that my brother and I shared. We’re only 14 months apart. “Irish twins,” my mother used to call us. I remember a shiny red wagon and being pulled to daycare in it. I remember the sound of my paternal grandmother’s soft Brooklyn-turned-Southern accent, and a red-haired Aunt Judy and her smooth-skinned Choctaw husband, Uncle Ricky. I remember the feel of Oklahoma more than the image of it. Perhaps, that’s because I left there when I was only two and a half, and I haven’t lived there since. I’ve only visited, though frequently, while growing up.
My memories of Oregon are much more vivid than my memories of Oklahoma. These are two states that sit next to each other in the American alphabet and whose histories have been intertwined since the early part of the 20th century, but both places pretend to be competely unaware of one another. The truth is, if you meet a person in Oregon whose family has lived there for more than one generation, there’s an Okie in the mix somewhere. The same goes for people with Irish-Scottish surnames in California. Oklahomans are kind of like boomerangs – their trajectories may lead faraway from home, but they always know where they really come from.
My parents moved to Oregon for a lot of the same reasons other Oklahomans over the decades have moved there. They needed better jobs, and Oregon boasted work. It’s true that both my mother and my father found employment in the Rogue Valley, but that’s where their good luck ran out. They were separated within two years and divorced in three. By my fifth birthday, my mother had met my stepfather at a fish bake in Talent, way up in the Siskiyou Mountains where my brother and I used to stare hard out the car windows for Big Foot.

I decided to start my giveaway with a small but very big gift: the eternity ring my father gave to my mother for their 25th wedding anniversary.
As we have been reminded by Tolkien’s wonderfully creepy Gollum, rings can be very precious and very powerful. Over the centuries and across cultures, they have come to represent such mighty concepts as loyalty, unity and eternity. This ring meant all of these things to my mother. Originally from Tehran, she had journeyed to England when she was just 18 to study English, and it was there that she met my Scottish father. They married when she was 20, and she was with him until her last breath on her 51st birthday. I have no doubt that if she hadn’t been afflicted with leukemia, they would still be together today. A day or two before she died, my sister Roshan and I sat with her on her bed and she sorted through her jewelry, sharing her treasures between us, with our brother Alan and Dad looking on. Mum was the most modest of women so had few items of great financial value, but each had meaning: a stone necklace from India where she and Dad had lived for 4 years (and where I was born), a silver brooch from Scotland, where we had lived as a family for over 10 years, an enameled pendant from Canada, another 4-year home. The joy it gave her to share these beloved items with us before she died was very apparent. She didn’t, however, part with her engagement, wedding or eternity rings. She died married to our father.
A few years ago, when I was visiting my father in England, I asked him if Roshan and I could have Mum’s engagement and eternity rings. It took him a few minutes to find them, but he gladly gave me them to bring back to Los Angeles. I kept the eternity ring and insisted Roshan keep the older engagement ring, as they had had a much closer relationship. In the over 20 years since Mum died, both Roshan and I have become more and more like her, especially after becoming mothers ourselves. But Roshan truly shares her beauty, her thoughtfulness, her love of family and her intense loyalty. In the last year or so, Roshan’s world has been shaken by the collapse of her own marriage. As we enter this New Year, she is grieving the second family disintegration of her life and is learning to accept her new journey. As her big sister I try my best to support, mostly by showering her with unsolicited advice (isn’t that what big sisters are for?), and reassuring her that she is wonderful and will be ok. Yet I can never offer her the level of comfort that Mum could have. The best I can do is offer her a ring that reminds her that her mother’s love will be with her forever.

Andrea Llosa
Award-winning designer and niece to Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, Andrea Llosa takes inspiration from her time living abroad in Spain and London, and mixes it with her Peruvian heritage and her trained eye for interesting fabrics and silhouettes. Andrea’s collections are glamorous yet urban, contemporary and utterly wearable – a combination that takes raw talent and creativity on the designer’s part, two things that she has in abundance. You’ll find a lot of black in Andrea Llosa’s boutique, perhaps unexpected in Peru, but no less interesting and immensely sexy. Look out for her jewelry, too, which is a real standout.

Traditional Indian Jewelery
Introduction
The convention of embellishing herself has been the greatest charm for any woman on this earth. And Indian women are no exception to it. The tradition of Jewelery in India is a long affair of over 5000 years. Indian jewelery has become an inseparable part of an Indian woman’s life. Known for its variety, elegance and intricate expertise, the jewelry of India has won over many hearts and has been a perennial source of inspiration for many. The art of adorning oneself is not restricted to women only. History is an evidence that even men love to adorn themselves with pieces of jewelery. Indian Jewelery is more than a mere ornament., the divinity and aesthetic essence is intact to it.
Origin
The tradition of jewelery making is not new to India but it was introduced and propagated long before. Since primitive times, the indigenous style of jewelry making has set the Indian Jewelery convention apart form others. The skillful artisans had taken inspiration from the objects around them and molded a trivial thing as seeds, feathers, leaves, berries, fruits, flowers, animal bones, claws and teeth into a beautiful ornament. Every possible thing around the human being was transmuted into a artistic creation to beautify him. Such jeweleries are even today worn by many. The excavations at Mohenjodaro and other sites of the Indus Valley civilization are an evidence to the rich legacy of hand made ornaments of that time.
History
Metals like gold, silver, brass, copper, ivory, precious and semi precious stones were skillfully transformed to exquisite jewelery pieces. Our much revered epics also give glimpses of their love for ornaments. Manusmiriti lays some obligations of goldsmith. With the commencement of the third century B.C. India had gained the status of being an exporter of gems and precious stones. History holds it that jewelery was not only meant for humans but the idols of Gods and Goddesses, ceremonial horses and elephants were even adorned with jeweleries of gold.
Evolution
Kings envied each other and always to get hold of possession of mold exquisite jeweleries. India was looked upon as a Golden bird for its massive treasure of gold, gems and stones. In those times, silver was the bulwark of Indian jewelery. Silver jewelery was considered more elegant and beautiful. Temples, and other splendid edifices encouraged different types of ornaments fragrant with sandalwood beads, the prayer beads and rudraksh. Jewelery was regarded as the most profitable investment as it could be easily converted into cash.
Types of Indian Jewelery
India is a proud manufacturer of exclusive ornaments. The heritage of jewelery making has been passed down from one generation to then other. The variety in Indian Jeweleries is exceptionally excellent. With so many motifs, designs and patterns, the ornaments are simply adored by numerous connoisseurs. People just drool over these pieces of beauty and grace. Ethnicity and contemporary fashion is so well blended in these pieces that the beholder is enticed by the very site of these. From tribal jewelery to ethnic, silver, gold, polki, kundan, meenakari, lac, pearl, theva and shell jewelery has been embraced by jewelery freaks.
Exclusive Ornaments
Indian Jewelry can adorn any and every body part of ours. Choose any of these ornaments, they are sure to enhance your beauty.

2015 stretches out ahead, a new year of exciting weaving challenges and opportunities!
January will be totally focused on weaving for an area exhibit. The Art Gypsies, of which I am a member, were asked if we would like to have an exhibit at Nicolet College Art Gallery. We all agreed, and the exhibit will open Friday, February 6, 2015, and close on Saturday, March 7, 2015. Visit their page (link above) for details. (I know, poor photo, but it’s all I hard to work with!)
I will be working on a collaborative piece with Char, and hopefully a garment along with a couple scarves. Designs and detailed calculations are being worked on now, and the weaving begins tomorrow morning. I have a woven shibori warp on the loom to finish (the first scarf is already sold), and I’m hoping another 3-4 scarves if enough warp, The next warp will be wider for the exhibit weavings.
Along with weaving for the exhibit, I’ll have weaving at Artistree Gallery, Land O’ Lakes, WI, beginning mid-January. Artistree is a cooperative gallery so I will be working a couple days a month there, and always have weaving or sock handwork to take with, or a spinning wheel for a good days of spinning wool.
The Art Gypsies will also have their annual art show/sale on June 13th, more information here and on my webpage/blog (see 2015 Calendar page) for details of time and location.
2015 will also include the Northwoods Art Tours, always a good time, and this year my daughter Sarah Zindel will be a guest artist with her handmade jewelry. The summer art tour dates are July 24-25-26, 2015, fall art tour dates are Oct. 9-10-22, 2015. Mark your calendars!

Home › graphic novels › Teaching a Course on Arabic Graphic Novels
By mlynxqualey on January 2, 2015 • ( 0 )
One of my favorite readers wrote in to say that he’s planning a course focused around Arabic graphic novels. Please add your recommendations; my list is very Egypt-centric:
A City Neighboring Earth, (مدينة مجاورة الأرض) by Jorj Abu Mhayya, Dar Onboz, Lebanon. This won the prestigious 2012 International Comics Book Festival of Algeria (FIBDA) book award for a work in Arabic. See more here.
Metro (مترو), by Magdy al-Shafee, published by The Comic Shop. This fast-paced genre fiction shows us a world of corruption, sexual harassment, and hopelessness, and faced banning, fines, and its own harassment from the Egyptian government. It is now finally available in Arabic again in Cairo, in addition to English and Italian.
Apartment in Bab El-Louk (في شقة باب اللوق) by Donia Maher, Ganzeer, and Ahmed Nady. This is a beautiful noir-esque work that’s as much poetry as prose, and Ganzeer asserts that this isn’t a graphic novel. He said in a previous interview, “I would never attempt to pass “The Apartment in Bab El-Louk” as a graphic novel or anything remotely close to it. Just because there are drawings, doesn’t make it a comic book or graphic novel. The sequentiality that would exist on a singular page of your typical graphic novel is nowhere to be seen in this particular book, save for the very last nine pages illustrated by Ahmad Nady. An entire story told in full-page splashes just isn’t a graphic novel. The narration is a little bit more designy, making the book more of a visual album of sorts. Or as you eloquently put it: ‘a fabulous noir poem.'”

Wedding Information All Couples Ought To Know About
0
Wedding planning requires lots of effort, time, and energy. You have to pick the perfect venue, dress, etc. and for many, it’s the most important day of their lives. The following information will help you plan the details of your wedding so that is is a successful and memorable day.
Remember to consider how you would like the alcohol at your reception served, and how much it will cost. Open bars are typically very expensive, especially when they are open for long time-periods. Check with your venue to find out the alcohol options they have for you to choose from.
If you are assigning any guest to give a speech at your wedding, have him rehearse the speech with you beforehand to ensure that it is appropriate. At a wedding, there is normally a collection of different generations present, and you need to remember that a joke that young people find funny may actually offend older guests.
