(Slightly) Off the Beaten Path: Things To Do in Maui, Hawaii

For three years growing up, my family lived in Anchorage, Alaska. No, we didn’t live in an igloo and use dogsleds as our method of transportation, but it did get pretty cold in the winter, and the near-24 hours of darkness wasn’t fun. It only made sense that each winter that we were there, my family took a two week trip to Maui, Hawaii. Even after we moved back to Calgary, Canada (which is where I was born), we’d still visit Maui every few years. In my almost-22 years of life, I’ve been to the island ten times. It’s easy to get lost in the lazy Hawaiian ways, to slow down to a crawl even while the days fly by, to spend hours and hours at the beach and by the pool, licking ice cream cones and sipping tropical smoothies. Ah, paradise…

While that’s all very well and good, that’s not my travel style. I like to soak up the culture of every place I visit, to experience everything that’s on offer, to see and do as much as possible. So, if you’re interested in spending your time in Maui a little differently, I’ve composed a list of my favourite things to do. Alternately, if you want to use your vacation to soak up the sun on the beautiful white sand beaches, I’m not judging. There’s no better place in world to catch up on some relaxation. No matter how you decide to experience Maui, enjoy!








(note: I realize a lot of these places are along the Hana Highway, but keep in mind that you don’t have to do the whole route, or even get on the treacherous part of the road, to do and see the things I’m mentioning! They’re great things to do and excellent places to stop at, all on their own.)



Some of these activities are still a little stereotypical and touristy, but it’s Hawaii — the whole locale is aimed directly at tourists. There a few things on this list that are completely unexpected, a few that are completely cheesy, and a few that fall somewhere in the middle.
