(027/365) Indian Darling

By Kelli Renee
Here is my little darling from India standing in front of the Taj Mahal. It is a mixed media piece and was done with acrylic paints on canvas board, including gold acrylic and gemstone accents for her jewels. This is definitely one the the cultures I find the most interesting. The women look so beautiful in their colorful sari’s, head wear, wraps, and intricate jewelry I just had to paint one this week for the cultural theme. I first became interested in India in 2005 when I saw an Imax film on the big format screen called “Mystic India”. It’s all about the cultures and traditions of the Indian people. It’s told through the 7 year and 12,000 km barefoot journey throughout 18th century India undertaken by the Hindu adolescent ascetic Nilkanth, later known in life as Swaminarayan by his followers. (I found a copy of the full movie in YouTube in HD and linked it below, it’s 45 minutes but it’s an amazing film). Throughout the movie I was amazed by the beauty of India and have wanted to travel there ever since. I have been known to indulge in some of the Bollywood movies and music as well. Another tradition I am really fond of is the art of mehndi, which is temporary tattoos made with henna. It is most commonly done on the palms and feet of brides for good fortune in marriage. There are so many delicious Indian meals I enjoy as well, especially when being vegetarian your options can be limited, but Indian food has a lot of variety of  really tasty food.
