Hippie island Lanta

On our first evening on Ko Lanta we strolled through the lit up streets with all the shops in Sala Dan. We were really happy to find a small food market as we were so hungry. We enjoyed Pad Thai (Thai noodles), Chicken Kebab and Thai pancakes from different little stalls. The same night Naomi regretted it. That’s why we had a chilled Sunday to relax and recover. In the evening Clara purchased a small action camera (similar to a Gopro) with a lot of additional stuff for our upcoming underwater adventures.
The next day we started with a nice breakfast from the Thai lady next by and rented a scooter. We set off in search for another hostel closer to the beach and found a nice one further south. As the food from the restaurant next to our accommodation was so good, we returned for lunch. We spent some more time there on a couch talking and watching the restaurant while the lady was shopping on the local market. She was really sweet and brought us some mandarines to thank us.

It was already late afternoon when we finally made our way to the beach. We enjoyed the water and sunset before we went back.
After some searching we took our first TukTuk to move into the new hostel.
As we found the ultimate hostel, we moved again! It was called Chill Out House and the name describes the atmosphere perfectly. It is completely built out of wood, like a treehouse and there are pillows to rest on everywhere. The walls were decorated with shells and there a lot of painting that added to the boho/ indie style. Our “monkey” dormitory was high up in the trees and we slept on mattresses on the ground with mosquito nets that protected us from all the insects that could easily fly in, as it was all open.

The best way to get around on the island is by scooter, so we rented another one to get to the next bay. At that beach there were a lot of hippie beach bars with raggae music and lanterns all over. We had a sunbath, went swimming and relaxed the rest of the afternoon in a hammock in one of the bars.

Our actual plan was to go to the most southern point of the island to watch the sunset beside the lighthouse. But time passed quicker and Lanta is bigger than you might think, so we had to stop  next to the road to watch the sun going down.
We were slightly disappointed when we took our sunglasses off as it wasn’t as beautiful in real life. At least we got some nice shadow shots.

To end off the day we dined at a nice restaurant on the beach called “Same same, but different”, a typical Thai motto.
A long dark scooter ride and a filled fuel tank later we arrived at our hostel to fall into our monkey beds.
Around Ko Lanta there are a lot of small beautiful islands. So we joined all the people from our hostel that did the four islands tour the next day, as it was highly recommended.
To get to our boat we first had to take a fully packed open pickup to the beach. The ride in the longtailboat took so much longer than we thought and it was wavy as hell! The water was splashing up and we were totally soaked afterwards. At the first island we stopped for some snorkling through hundreds of fish. They were fighting for food and you could swim so close, that you almost touched them.
Fifteen minutes later we were in the water again, at another island, but this time the water was really deep and there was not much to see.

That’s why we didn’t stay there for long and went on to the main attraction: Emerald cave. It’s a lagoon hidden inside the island, only accessable by swimming through a dark cave tunnel. This time we were going in a group without mask and snorkel. The only problem was that the zipper of Clara’s Bikini top broke and it took ages trying to fix it while in the water. The group was already at the entrance and we needed their light so we had to swim really really fast to catch up with them. After fixing the zipper finally inside the cave, we could enjoy the scenery. It was breathtaking!

All the swimming and sun made us really hungry so we were happy to get our lunch on the last beautiful island. The sand was pure white and soft and the water really blue. We swam out into the sea to look for some fish and corals and enjoyed the sun.
