Birthstone for February

The birthstone associated with the month of February is Amethyst. The color ranges from faint mauve to rich purple.
But did you know that a very interesting legend is associated with Amethyst?
The Legend of the Amethyst
Bacchus was the Greek God of fertility, wine and also the patron of tragedy. One day he was in a bad mood, he decided to take a walk with his tiger and vowed to vent out his anger on whosoever he came across first.

At that time, a beautiful maiden Amethyst was on her way to the Temple of Diana, the Goddess of Moon. She came across Bacchus. Bent upon taking out his anger, Bacchus let his tiger attack Amethyst. As the tiger attacked Amethyst, she called upon Diana, the Moon Goddess for help but she arrived too late. The tiger had already shredded Amethyst’s body. Diana, upset by the ghastly sight decided to honor her devotee and turned Amethyst’s body into a white pillar.
As Bacchus watched with horror, He realized his folly. He gathered his finest bottle of wine and poured it on to the white pillar, turning it into a violet amethyst.
What makes the Amethyst so popular?
