Hey there. It’s been some time since I posted a book review. In fact, it’s been some time since I posted anything at all. But I just started my internship and am currently working out a schedule to include my favourite activies (reading and watching movies). Anyway, I managed to pick up The Darkest Minds on new year’s eve. So without further ado, here are my thoughts on The Darkest Minds.
WARNING: Minor spoilers ahead.
I was really excited when I first got this book. I’ve heard so many good things about it and I was really in the mood for a good dystopian read. So I dove into the book eagerly. But, maybe I was too eager. I did not really enjoy the first portiion of the book. The flashbacks did not really work out for me, and I was not a fan of the characters. Ruby, the lead female protagonist, is very passive in my opinion. She does not stand up for herself nor her friends. She may be powerful but I do not feel like she is a strong female character. She is merely a spectator to the things that happens around her.
I do feel that this was a good decision on the part of the author. With a passive lead protagonist, we get to see the horrors that are happening around the character, as though we are viewing from a camera lens. I just felt that I would have liked Ruby better if she was more proactive in the story.
However, the book does pick up after the first 100 pages or so. The first part of the book was a bit too slow-paced to me but the pace really picks up as the story goes on. Though I do not like Ruby, I do like the character of Charles, or more commonly known as Chubbs. Chubbs is the brain of the group. He is smart and logical. But most importantly, he is witty. He started off not liking Ruby but slowly grew on her. I really love the banters between Chubbs and Ruby. They are so funny and just brings a smile to my face.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though it did take me some time to start enjoying it, I really like the overall plot. I advice those who feel like putting the book down to persevere and press on. It really gets better as the story progresses.
