Valentine’s Day is a day designated for love each love. February 14th is a day to tell the one person you love, just how much it is that you love them. Women and men from all over the world expect gifts. Some lavish, some not. There are cliché gifts, such as chocolates, teddy bears, and red roses. Who wouldn’t love to cuddle up to a soft teddy bear, stuff their faces with chocolate truffles all while gazing upon their beautiful red roses? Some women say, “Flowers die. Get me something meaningful.” Some men take the opportunity to buy jewelry or clothes. I don’t necessarily have a problem with Valentine’s Day, but I do have a problem with today’s way of thinking.
Why is it that we only feel the need to go above and beyond the bar on this specific day? I don’t want a man that only gets me flowers on February 14th or Mother’s Day or even my birthday. I want a man, that if he think I love flowers, sends them randomly because he wants to make me smile. Not because it’s a holiday or a special occasion, but because every day spent together is considered special and he thinks I deserve that. I don’t want a man that only buys me gifts because it’s a holiday. I like the simple things in life and I like random gifts. Meaningful gifts. You know what my valentine got me this year? Our very first Valentine’s Day spent together and he didn’t buy some lavish arrangement of flowers. He didn’t buy an oversized teddy bear. And he damn sure didn’t buy me an entire box of chocolates. Why? Because we aren’t cliché. He bought me something that mattered. Something he knew I loved. Actually, something he knew I was obsessed with. Coffee. I got two different types of coffee in the most adorable Valentine bag with a puppy on it. Laugh it up, but this meant more to me than red roses and a box of chocolates. It meant he pays attention to what I like and don’t like. I didn’t go out and spend money on something I “thought” he might like. Instead, Valentine’s Day fell on a Saturday and we have a Saturday tradition…sort of. Wingstop. He loves Wingstop and even better, he loves Wingstop in bed. What’s even better than Wingstop in bed? Wingstop in bed and two Redbox movies. The man didn’t even have to crawl out of bed yesterday. I got him something I knew he liked. My Valentine’s Day was just like any other day. Not because we’re plain and simple, but because we don’t only show each other affection on that specific day. Good food, good movies, and even better cuddles and company. What more could a simple girl ask for?
I would just like to see more people taking the time to give gifts on March 3rd, simply because it’s just March 3rd and it’s not a holiday. Think about what your significant other wants. I know I want more than Valentine’s Day. Do you?
