Rhetoric Persuasion
Ethos- “In one hand he held a paste pot, in the other a brush and a bulletin sheet. He took his time. He set the bulletin on a table, out of sight, but everyone in the crowd could tell what he was doing by the motion of his shoulders.” 18
Pathos- “One month after moving into his building, Holmes sold the former Holton drugstore and assured the buyer that he would face little competition.” 71
Logos- Crest White strips “a whiter smile in just 2 hours”
Science of Persuasion
Reciprocity- “If you don’t like, we will take it back and give your money back”
Scarcity- “Come down Hendrick Toyota to buy new Camrys for 40% down only for a limited time!”
Authority- “A man of such exalted professional stature in an office so high above the city, would have come as a great and satisfying surprise of his late father.” 18
Consistency- “The next year, however, he bolted to Nevada with friends to try his hand at mining gold. He failed. He ran for the Nevada legislature and failed again. He returned to Chicago broke, in a cattle car, and joined the firm of an architect named L.G. Lauren.” 19
Liking- “Holmes promised also to take care of all the legal details and to record the transfer with city officials.” 124
Consensus- “Thus Ned was particularly susceptible to an offer from Holmes that seemed likely to increase his own stature in Julia’s eyes.” 124
Presentation to Freshmen Class
Good day freshmen class, I am here today on a mission to stop the overgrowing amounts of plastic water bottles used in America. And did you know that Americans used 50 billion water bottles last year and we are wasting about $1 billion dollars in plastic and still 38 billion bottles are being wasted. so I ask of you today is do stop using plastic bottles and get a water bottle and drink from the tap because how much does your planet mean to you?
My Personal Example
I experienced a whole number of persuasion skills, but one stood out it happen when the Army was recruiting. He used Logos to point out the benefits of the Army and used consistency to me so that I come in to interview on what the Army offers. I was little convinced that the Army could help me pay for school, but I knew that it wasn’t really for me because I did not want to take the chance to be a active duty soldier.
Rhetoric Persuasion
Ethos – “Other nations, he wrote, had mounted exhibits of dignity and style, while American exhibitors erected a mélange of pavilions and kiosks with no artistic guidance and no uniform plan.”(15) DWC
Logos- “Regrow hair in 4 months!” Rogaine
Pathos-“he held her, stroked her hair, and with moist eyes assured that she had nothing to worry about, certainly he would marry her, as he long had promised.” 146
Science of Persuasion
Reciprocity- “The fair awakened America to beauty and as such was a necessary passage that laid the foundation for me like Frank Lloyd Wright and Ludwig Miles van der Rohe.’ 376
Scarcity- I experienced scarcity by buying 2 whole boxes of the Crunch bars girls scout flavors because they were only there for a limited time, and then next day I went to grab some more.
Authority- Holmes possessed Julia now as fully as if she was an antebellum slave, and he reveled in his possession.” 146
Consistency- “He bristled at the persistent belief that John Root deserved most of the credit for the beauty of the fair.” 377
Liking- “the architects continued to meet but without Burnham, who stayed beside his partner’s bed except for occasional departures to help resolve issues back in the library or to visit Hunt.” 106
Consensus- “Burnham persuaded the head of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Alexander Cassatt, to remove his freight tracks and depot from the center of the federal mall, thus creating the obstructed green that extends today from the capitol to Lincoln Memorial.” 374
Presentation to Freshmen Class
Good day, freshmen class I would like to talk about what is next after high school? Are you going to college, community college, or joining the work force? The next four years you should think about how you are going to apply yourself to the real world, and you should find the things that you are passionate about. Have an open mind on how you are going set the right course for your future. Look at where you can make difference in the world and pursue your passions.
My Personal Example
So I played football freshmen year and during the middle of the season we had to sell these gift cards for $20 apiece. I went door to door selling them in my old neighborhood where people knew me (liking), so I ended up selling ten of them.
Rhetoric Persuasion
Ethos- “He could still charm them and commiserate over their inability to locate the elusive deed holder, H.S. Campbell.” 86
Logos- Belknap still did not like Holmes, but he found his candor sufficiently disarming that when Holmes asked him to endorse a note for $2500 to help cover the cost of a new house in Wilmette for himself and Myrta.” 87
Pathos-“He has often taken babies that were crying from their mothers, and it would hardly be any time until he had them sound asleep or playing as happily as little ones can.” 66
Science of Persuasion
Reciprocity- “Burnham wrote to Sullivan and urged him to modify his design to create “one grand entrance toward the east and make this much richer than either of the others you had proposed…” 114
Scarcity- “Brand new Jeep Wranglers 25% down, but only for a limited time.”
Authority- “For every business that now refused to sell him goods, there were a dozen more that fawned over him and accepted his notes endorsed by H.S. Campbell or secured by the assets of the Warner Glass Bending Company.” 86
Consistency- “ he placed newspaper advertisements for carpenters and laborers, and soon workers with teams of horses began excavating the land.” 67
Liking- “Holmes began appearing more frequently at the Wilmette house. He brought toys for Lucy, jewelry for Myrta and her mother. He filled the house with love.” 86
Consensus- “Take action with our new fitness for life program that will change your life!”
My Presentation to Freshmen Class
Good morning, freshmen class I am here to talk about a global issue that has been around of us for 100 of years. Homelessness a global issue that can affect anyone at any time, and we need to find ways to eliminate this global issue. There are over 100 million homeless all around the world and we need your help. I would like for you to volunteer or donate money to a homeless organization making our goal that much brighter.
My Personal Example
So I was talking to my rugby buds and they told me that the New Zealand All Blacks were coming to Chicago to play the USA Eagles. They told me they are getting tickets to the game, so I rushed home told my dad and asked if we can go. He told me he would think about it, and I was getting anxious because the game was getting sold out fast (scarcity). So my dad said yes and I told him that we need to get tickets, but he told me that he already got the tickets and I was on my way to Chicago.
