Here are the biggest trends from the Spring 2015 runways…

Denim
Did you know that the supposedly all-American thing has Euro roots? It’s named for the Provençal city of Nîmes (as in de Nîmes) and the word jeans is an adaptation of Genoa, the Italian city where they were first produced. (And I thought Levi Strauss was the genius!) Right now, denim is everywhere and it’s fully acceptable to wear it top-to-toe.
Matisse as Inspiration: From the Museum to the Runway
No one ever painted blocks of color like Matisse: geometric shapes, biomorphic curves, sinewy spirals. It was all on the runways for this season.
The Bare Face (it helps to be a model)
In order to achieve the season’s “nude face” on the Gucci runway, seven products were used: foundation, concealer, mascara, translucent powder, and three eye shadows. Oh, and lip balm plus moisturizer.

Toga Party
The clothes were all flowing, white and Grecian – with gladiator sandals. It was ancient Rome redux.
Well-Cinched Belts
Both wide and narrow, very tight belts defined the waistline.

The Army-Navy Game: Military neutrals
It was khaki and olive-drab on many runways – along with navy blue, the uniform of the U.S.
A Rainbow of Leather
Leather was everywhere in bright, bold colors: mid-length coats, two-piece suits and miniskirts.
Fringe Is Back
It’s the trend that will not die – no matter how much I wish that it would just go away forever.
Big Baubles
I saw really big, statement earrings all over the runways. Be sure you keep them in proportion to your face. They can overwhelm a small face.

Woodstock
Flashback! Festival style has taken over. Think Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell. I saw flower power in bold and blooming prints, “natural” hair loose and flowing, and “maximum dressing” in muumuus.
Shady Ladies
Choose a transformative pair of sunglasses for spring: styles à la Robocop, Grace Jones, Dame Edna, or Iris Apfel were featured for this season.
Platform Heels
If you want mega-height, these are for you. Tall, tall – with a nod to the disco era.

Go-Go Gingham
More glamorous than you would think. (I went in thinking Wizard of Oz.)

Lacy Dresses
Lovely, mostly white – dress up or casual. Very romantic look.
Accessorized Hair
To continue the romantic theme, I saw lots of long hair with accessories holding it up or back. Just make sure it’s not too perfect. (Try Redken Wind Blown and drugstore barrettes to pull it off.)
