Hello again! Whoo-ee have I been busy around here! Earlier this week, I finished putting together a proposal for the parents at the preschool I hope to be taking photos for next week (yes, I decided to go for it and will find out tonight if they’d like to have me). And then, this weekend I had two shoots on Saturday. The first was for a little sweetheart I had the pleasure of meeting last September, Lucia. I took photos for Lucia and her mom, Erina, out at their grandparents camp on Lake Superior. It was soooo beautiful. Remember this?
Well, Lucia has continued to grow and time has passed, and she’s turning 1 in a couple of days! So Erina brought the girl over for some cake smash pictures. Have you heard of this? It’s the newest (and greatest, might I add) way to capture the essence of that first birthday. The mom brings the child to a professional photographer with a birthday cake, and they proceed to have a photo shoot of the child diving into the cake. I can’t express to you how much fun this was! I want to do more of these… please- tell your friends! I HAVE to do more of these.

First, we tried to get some regular photos of Lucia before she got all messy. Here she is holding the stuffed penguin I picked up for her. Her theme for her party this weekend will be winter wonderland with silver/white/black and a little pink, and some penguins. Isn’t that lovely?!
Lucia seemed pretty scared of the crazy lady with the big black thing stuck to her face, so she wasn’t all that into smiling for me. But as my good friend, Louisa, pointed out, at this age when kids don’t smile sometimes it’s even better as their eyes are so expressive. And I think she’s right. Just look at these eyes!
Lucia did perk up a bit when Mom pulled out the fancy jewelry: And here I was able to get a little bit of upturned corners when I showed her my Valentine’s monkeys: We put her on the blue chair and gave her blue beads, but she still wasn’t sure about me… She’s so gorgeous! And then it was time… bring out the cake!

I think Lucia might be a bit stunned that all of that is just for HER! What’s this? A sprinkle? Mmmm.. sprinkles are good… Yup, I can do this: I can eat this whole thing! ? ! It started with one finger at a time: Cakes are messy:Then she started digging in a little deeper… I cannot get enough of this girl’s eyes! Using the whole hand now: Starting to feel that sugar… Yay for birthday cake! Then she started to get a little more brave. Here she is crawling around: Oh, the cake is still here?! Maybe dolly wants some: Here’s the final cake face: And after all that, this is the final cake photo! That’s it! That’s all she ate!Ha! That was soooo much fun. Thanks for bringing Lucia over, Erina! Have a WONDERFUL time celebrating that beautiful girl’s first birthday! Getting through that first year can be tough at times, and you ALL need to let your hair down and celebrate :)
After the sugary funness of the morning, I had my first senior shoot in the afternoon! Can you believe it? And it was a boy! I don’t know why that’s so shocking to me, but I guess I just figured my first senior would be a girl. I must admit I was a bit nervous, but then it ended up being AMAZING! It turns out that when your subject is over the age of ten, all you have to do is say things like, “Now turn your head a little more to the left,” and they actually do it! They do it! Just like that *snap! It was incredible. So, while I have not even really begun to dive into Brendan’s photos yet, I do have this early favorite I can share as a sneak peek:
Brendan plays hockey for Houghton High School, so we took quite a few photos of him in his hockey gear. After our inside shoot, we were supposed to head outside for more photos, but it was too snowy this weekend. We’re currently planning on Tuesday afternoon, and hopefully Mother Nature will cooperate. So I plan to have lots more photos to show you next week which will include some outside shots. I can’t wait to get this boy back in front of the camera. I’m telling you – he was so easy!
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention – I talked to the family and they have so generously agreed to let me try having the studio in the living room now. So I’ve moved the necessities down to the main floor, and have packed things up as neatly as I can in the corners, and we’re going to try living around everything. In all honesty, we hardly use that room anyway, and we have the family room down there, too, where we usually relax. So this just made sense. The light is better, and now when people come for shoots, they won’t have to trek all the way up to the attic. Hooray!
On to non-business related things – this week was Winter Carnival for Michigan Tech. This is when the students have a day or two off and they have a chance to participate in a bunch of fun outdoorsy activities like broomball and snow statue building. This is one of my favorite weeks around here. I LOVE to see the statues, and it’s just so awesome when people celebrate all the snow we get. I get pretty tired of hearing people complain about it (although I must admit my friends in other parts of the state complain MUCH more than those up here do). So on Wednesday, our running group headed through campus to take in the happenings of the all-nighter (they judge the statues on Thursday morning). It was only 7 degrees, but was -13 with the windchill. Nothing can stop us! I also like how 10 people is now considered a small group. We usually have closer to 20 each week these days:
On Friday, the first grade classes went on a field trip to check out the statues. I went with Lewis’ class, and there were enough parent volunteers that we were able to break up into small groups. I think that my group saw everything that was right there on campus in a very short amount of time. We did have to run at the end to make sure we were back in time. Here’s Lewis posing in front of the Easter Island statue with two of his classmates. The theme this year was vacation places:
And this was a cool arch they wanted to go through: While this statue didn’t win (not enough detail in my opinion), it was still cool. This one was Isle Royale. Can you see the moose?
Here you can see the silhouette made of ice of a wolf up on the hill:
Then, on Friday night, Jim and I played boot hockey with Shannon, Rob, Kelly, and Todd up in Calumet. It was an event put on by the SADD chapter of Calumet High School and was a real trip. I don’t have any photos to share, but I can tell you many stories of the night. They would range from us being the eldest group (by far), but probably also the most fit. As the night went on, we got better and better while the other teams got slower and slower. We finished in last place, but that was mostly by choice. It was seriously a real hoot, and I think we’ll probably play again in the future. :)

Another part of Winter Carnival are the fireworks on Saturday night. We completely forgot about them until we heard the booming in the air and Chuck ran to our sides, terrified. I got the kids out of bed, and we watched from Lewis’ window:
Here’s a photo for you – my friend, Jess, wondered if we still had the hot tub because I haven’t posted anything about it in a while. So Cat and I took a selfie yesterday afternoon:
And this is where I should be including photos of Lewis’ meal from last night, but I’ll tell you the truth: we pooped out and ordered pizza instead. So I’ll add some photos of a fun dance party we had on Saturday afternoon instead:
And, I’m going to try including a video again. This time I’m going to google how to do it properly. Wish me luck!
