There’s been quite a lot going on this week- Amongst other things, I was super proud to witness my gorgeous honorary nephew taking his very first steps! After a busy week, the mister and I decided to head to Newcastle to take advantage of the Restaurant Week deal at Coop Chicken House, and have a good mooch about town while were there.
The Grainger Market
Our trip began, as usual, in my beloved Grainger Market. We had a casual saunter around, and had a look at the new places to eat that had opened up since our last trip. I’ve decided that really, in order to make the most of the fantastic array of delicious looking food, we’ll have to have a day trip through when we just eat our way around the place. From a Dumpling and Tea Bar to Turkish foodstuffs, there really is a fantastic range of choice all under the humble market roof. We did a bit of shopping at Mmm… and browsed the best of what the market had to offer.
There’s always a great selection of fresh fruit and veg…
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted!
… Even more gorgeous ingredients!
Shopping done, we headed off down to Coop Chicken House. If you’ve been reading All About Eats for a while you’ll know that we ate there during last summer’s restaurant week too. When the menus went online for this run of deals, Mr Eats seemed pretty set on heading back there for some of their damn fine chicken. Of course, there were no complaints from me! This time the restaurant week offer was for a half chicken, any two sides and a shot of one of their specialist chilli sauces for £10.
The Menu
Damn Fine Chicken being perfectly cooked!
Being perfectly honest- Everything was just as good, if not better, than last time. Mr Eats opted to try Bims BBQ Beans on this visit, which he said were proper, homemade baked beans just like they should be in somewhere with this high standard of simply prepared, tasty food. I’d also give them an award, if it was at all possible, for their INCREDIBLE sweet potato fries. If you visit, you absolutely must try these- So crispy, with a caramelised, almost toffee like background taste. I once more opted for Bims Coconut Relish as my sauce of choice. Again, if you’re in the mood for something delicately sweet but with a good chilli kick, this would be my recommendation. It’s moreish, packed with delicious coconut and summer flavours. I absolutely love this relish- It goes brilliantly well with the gorgeous chicken on offer at Coop, but I’d comfortably eat this with most things, including just a spoon!
A feast!
Cluck Cluck Cluck in the Chicken Coop…
Our bill, including two pint soft drinks, came to £26. Once more, I’d say that this was an excellent meal and would recommend it to anyone in the mood for some straight up, excellently prepared chicken (And killer sweet potato fries!). It’s also worth mentioning that they do some great value takeout options, including the seemingly ever popular ‘Coop Box’ where you get: Shredded Coop Chicken, slaw, sweet potato or regular fries, house BBQ sauce and any one of: Grilled Corn, Salad, Ratatouille, or BBQ beans. This is boxed up for you to take away for £5- I’m already eyeing this one up for the summer when I’ll be more in the mood for eating outside! I’ve also been told via Twitter that there will soon be a new chilli menu hitting the tables soon, so keep your eyes out for that! I have also been (thankfully!) reassured that my beloved Coconut Relish by Bims is staying!
It’s always great when you revisit somewhere for the second time and they manage to exceed your expectations. Equally, there are few things more disappointing than when they don’t. Fortunately, this does not seem to be the case at Coop and I look forward to visiting again!
Until next time,
