11 Signs an Aging Parent Needs Help

Sometimes its difficult to admit our once vital, strong, and independent parent needs help.  Sometimes denial is so deep in our parents needing help that you ignore the signs because you aren’t ready to deal with the reality.  Sometimes the signs are so small and our parents so crafty, that they pull the wool over your eyes so everything on the surface appears to be ok yet their health, home, and personal care has declined.  These subtle signs are based on countless home visits conducted and adult children not quite noticing how much help their parent truly needs.
11. Sign= Stained clothing or dirty clothing.    Wearing same outfit clothes repeatedly.   It becomes too difficult to unbutton/button clothing or dress/undress oneself. I was hired by a daughter to help her father.  She had not seen the inside of his home since he wouldn’t invite her him after their trip grocery shopping.  As I waited for my caregiver, “Harry” complained he couldn’t stretch out on his bed because his feet would get caught…He didn’t realize his shoes were the culprit, so I helped him take off his shoes so he could nap and was shocked to see his toe nails curled under  (he had not cut his toe nails because he couldn’t and didn’t remember too.)  Had I not taken off his shoes, I wouldn’t notice either.    His clothes were dirty & stained since he struggled to change out of them.
10.  Expired food in the fridge.  Growing up in the Great Depression and the desire to not waste food will cause seniors to eat foods that are toxic and dangerous.
9. No cleaning products in the kitchen (soap, detergent,  dish rag, sponge, etc.)  Your aging parent may find it too difficult and checking the trash may show signs of microwaveable foods and canned goods they can eat out of the container.

8.  Empty hamper or no visible signs of dirty laundry.  In observing some of my clients routines, they often will rehang their clothing since its too difficult to wash their clothes.  Their eyesight is diminishing as well, so many can’t see the stains and believe their clothing is clean.
