I will preface this post by admitting upfront that I am a technogeek! Moreover, until very recently, I was an early adopter of all the newest and coolest gadgets and technology! While many women immerse themselves in the latest fashion trends—buying clothing, jewelry, and perfumes—I have always found myself gravitating toward the nearest electronics department.
With my personal confession of my obsession fascination with technology firmly established, I must share with all of you my recent experience with Samsung’s Gear VR (Virtual Reality) headset, powered by Oculus VR. This piece of tech is truly mind-blowing, with immersive 3-D environments that are overwhelmingly impressive! I kid you not!
The headset itself seems a little bulky when first slipped onto your head but once the VR environment is activated the realism of the surroundings absorb you to the point that you seriously forget you are wearing the headset, much in the way that you forget you are wearing sunglasses while you are walking around on a bright, sunny afternoon. The 360° environments are incredible. I spent time wandering around some guy’s apartment as he played the piano. I sat in a theater watching a trailer for an upcoming film. I flew like a bird over Iceland and New Zealand. I walked among lions; had center seats for a short showing of Las Vegas’ Cirque du Soleil Zarkana; and piloted the ‘Gipsy Danger’ during a battle against the kaiju ‘Knifehead’ from the Sci-fi film, Pacific Rim (2013). I had the time of my life and never left the comfort of my living room!
The biggest drawback of this new tech is that you need a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 cell phone to use in conjunction with the Samsung’s Gear VR headset.
While this technology is still in its early stage, I believe this is a look at the future of entertainment, education, and more.
If you would like to learn more, here are some entertaining videos of the device and the virtual reality experience:

And this video is from fellow blogger, Jacob Siegal’s review, “Samsung’s Gear VR headset will let you go ‘shark diving in the desert’” , over at bgr.com. It a funny video of his father testing out the Samsung VR—especially humorous because I behaved in much the same way! As a heads up, this video is not safe for work due to some cursing:
I think I might just need to upgrade my old Samsung Galaxy S 5 now. ;)
