Only having a shirt stay in Singapore, the only way I can think to describe it is a western city with the beauty if an island nation in Southeast Asia. Another former British colony they speak English and currency is the Singaporean dollar. However when you land and see the city fully lite and feel the warmth of the island and smell of Malay noodle you clearly know you are in Asia!
Marina Bay and Merlion
This beautiful city- state has a lot to offer. It is a mixture of its surroundings and this was clear through our short journey here. Our morning tour started with the most recognizable site in Singapore, Merlion at Marina Bay! Merlion is the city’s mascot; it is a mythical creature that has the head of a lion and the body of a fish. Merlion reminds the people of its origins as a fishing village yet it’s official name Singapura means the lion city or back to its British colonization. Also viewable from the bay is the Singapore Flyer that was the largest Ferris (observation) Wheel until March 2014, but for me still the most impressive as you can see the neighboring countries of Malaysia and Indonesia!!
Leaving the bay we are instantly aware of the many different people and cultures that call Singapore home. Our first stop is the oldest and most important Taoist temple in Singapore- the Thian Hock Keng Temple. Built in an architectural style of southern China it’s main temple is dedicated to Mazu, the Taoist goddess of the sea and protector of all seamen.
Thian Heck Temple
Just a few blocks away we step into another uniquely Asia sub-culture-little India! A district of the city on buffalo road full of colorful garlands stacks of jewelry and great food! A leisurely stroll through this area is a must if any visit- the food is legit!
