Island Of Dreams: Part I

During the briefing, I was made aware of a few things. First and foremost, Fraser Island is a sand dune island. Over the course of what could be millions of years, northward ocean currents from Sydney would push loose sand up the coast. This sand accumulated on three rock formations and and island began to grow. And it’s still growing: approximately 50cm a year. The true miracle of this place is that by some strange twist of fate a rainforest grew on top of it all. You heard me right, a rainforest on a bed of sand. It’s the only one of its kind in the world, and its origins continue to baffle scientists.

Secondly, it’s a World Heritage listed site. In addition to being world famous, this means it’s heavily protected by Rangers and campfires are prohibited. It is also worth noting that only a certain amount of people are allowed to visit per year.

Thirdly, it’s a lot bigger than what one would think. The eastern beach by itself is 75 miles long. That’s almost like driving to Red Deer. Speaking of driving, the preferred mode of transit on the island is by 4WD sport utility vehicles. Walking is clearly impractical here. The tour group I was with had three of these, and the guide would drive the lead one, leaving the other two to everyone who followed him.
