Does My Bum Look Big In This?

0
By Cathy T
The after-Christmas clean-up has set in and with it came a whole host of jobs I really had no intention of doing just yet. One of them was setting my wardrobe to rights and it had me thinking that a blog on medieval clothing might be a good way to kick start the year. After all, nothing like cleaning out the old and bringing in the new (especially clothes – ask any woman!)
Since we’ve been raised in an era where any dress length on a woman is permissible, eg. ranging from a maxi to mini and every stage in between, it might surprise the younger generation to learn that hems only began to rise in the early 1900’s and even then, only slightly. They went from the ground to around the ankle then mid-calf to knee-length around the 1930’s and mini’s didn’t come in until the late 60’s. Since AD that’s nearly 2,000 years of women always wearing long dresses!

At the turn of the century 1,000 AD clothing styles altered only slightly from their predecessors, the long Saxon/Norman robes with wide, decorative borders around the neckline favoured for men and long gowns with either side openings or laced at the back for women, similarly decorated. Cloaks were added for extra warmth and by the late 1200’s, early 1300’s the men’s hood appeared with a liripipe (a long tail) and the styles began to show a little more flair. Fancy shaping (called dagging) appeared around the short caped hood and on sleeves.

The women had flowing gowns, sometimes more specifically referred to as kirtles or bliauts, and perhaps worn with a surcoat (surcotte) – an over-gown with the sides cut away from the shoulder to the hem. The sleeves of the dress were either very wide, almost reaching the floor, (maybe dagged) or tight against the arm, snug-fitting, with a row of buttons on the outside.

Almost everyone wore headwear, be it either a hood, hat or veil and by the 1400’s the women’s headdresses became larger, longer and pointier!

About this time fashion dictated a plucked hairline but then the Renaissance gave birth to more new trends, padded rolls, and eventually higher bust lines, the Tudor era of England preferring large, frilled collars.

NATIONAL COSTUMES @ MISS UNIVERSE

I may be a little harsh on our Miss Singapore’s after I saw what some of the others were wearing (or rather, forced at gunpoint, with the lives of their family’s three generations at stake).

“I pray the mutherfcuker who designed this will rot in hell. Ahhhhhhhh men!”

I didn’t know hockey is the national sport of Canada until now! The things you learn from Miss Universe! Even feng shui came into play here. 14 in Cantonese sounds like ‘sure die’, a curse on the other contestants surely. Must have been designed by an immigrant from Hong Kong. The ancestral candle stand on bitch’s head is a dead giveaway.

Running amok has never looked so deranged. Gurlfriend looks high on wateva the other evil contestants are feeding her. Nobody can look so delirious in such a monstrosity.

“Let me teach you how to behave,” says the dominatrix with a flick of her whip, and ropes, lots of rope.

Miss USA has gone absolutely bonkers! Apart from the red and white, who knew America is so much into drag?

A very smug looking Miss Korea hoping to win Miss Congeniality at the same time. Scheming bitch who’ll end up eating that rotten kimchi pizza on her chest while listening to All By Myself later in the night!

Judging from this costume, Nicaragua must be exporting vomit. Although the two bird heads on her hands are pretty cute. But how to win unless they send our one-and-only favourite (inset).

Costumey without bordering on OTT SCHIZO like some of the others. Doncha love the umbrella?
The good old tits-and-ass template, and why don’t I lift my modesty panel up just a little higher while we’re at it. Pity the feathers must have collapsed en route and didn’t make a complete circle.

The Wizard Of Oz

In the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz I believe the way they did the lighting throughout the movie was done in a very good way that expressed the tone throughout the movie. This movie went from a black and white movie to a movie that starts in sepia color to bright coloring and lighting along the way. When creating this movie, they knew they would have to produce massive lighting.
During the beginning of the movie, it starts out in a very low lighting with the color being sepia. It corresponds well to the beginning of the movie, because a tornado is about to come through the town and usually when it is stormy and tornados come through it is very dark and drowsy. It also was more of a sad time because Dorothy was fighting to get her dog Toto back and that is not a happy scene.
As the movie progresses on and she enters munchkin land, the movie brightens up and a lot of color and lightening come into play in the movie. The style of lighting used is high-key lighting. This style of lighting is typical of comedies, happy scenes, institutional and office scenes, and the like (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). The choosing of the lighting from munchkin land to emerald city was a good choice because it gave the audience the feel of happiness and character. When the part of the movie came on when they were at the wicked witch castle and the flying monkeys, they used a very low and dark lighting which corresponded well because that was a scary place to be and there was nothing good happening there.
I think if they would have changed the lighting at all in any of the senses than they movie may have been played out differently and maybe the viewers would not have felt the mood and tone that the director was trying to portray. I believe they did a very good job with the way the movie was completed.

WASHINGTON, DC (January 22, 2015) – As we mark the 42nd anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, we are reminded of the critical real life situations and necessary health protections that brought the right to choose to the forefront. We, like millions of other Republicans, believe in the GOP core values of individual freedom and safeguarding the constitutional protections of privacy and the separation of Church and State. Yet, decades after the historic Roe ruling, we struggle with how personal freedom is too often disregarded in political gamesmanship.
We applaud the level of common sense that resulted in the GOP tabling the abortion ban (H.R. 36) today. Regardless of personal views on the issue of abortion, provisions in this bill went too far, violating the private doctor-patient relationship, threatening to jail physicians and putting the health, future fertility and lives of women at risk. This proposal is particularly alarming due to the reporting requirement for victims of rape and incest to law enforcement officials. With the majority of rapes going unreported in the U.S., imposing such medically unnecessary restrictions only does more harm to women who have already survived assault.  GOP members of varying ideological leanings saw that this legislation would harm women and is not the type of legislation that should be central in the GOP agenda.
This victory should not be overlooked, but this is not the end of our battle for common ground and solutions-based legislation. The politics of pressure from a vocal anti-choice lobby today led to the ultimate passage of H.R. 7.  This so-called “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion” bill bars individuals to use their own money to purchase plans that offer abortion coverage and penalizes small businesses that offer their employees such coverage. Taxpayer funding of abortion has already been illegal since the enactment of the 1976 Hyde Amendment. The passage of H.R. 7 allowed fiction to win over fact.
As Republicans we are eager to work with all members of our party. Mainstream Republicans must be more vocal and counter the pressure to appease the anti-choice lobby. Instead of pandering on areas of disagreement on reproductive health– Republicans can take the lead to advance evidence-based initiatives that have already proven-effective at reducing the rates of unintended pregnancy, teen pregnancy and abortion.  RMC calls on all elected leaders to stop playing politics with personal freedom and understand that an unchecked anti-choice agenda has negative and lasting effect of the social and economic health of millions of women and families.
