This area is another great source of rubies, and these are a newer phenomenon than the other rubies mentioned. The rubies are found in rocks in the Vatomandry region of Madagascar. The rubies tend to be Red, Pink and Orange in terms of colouring and highlights.
These are also high-quality rubies, second only to the Burmese rubies in quality and are mined in regions towards the South-east of Bangkok. They are much darker than the Burmese rubies because in addition to Chromium, they also contains traces of iron. In terms of colour, they are liable to have traces of Brown or Burgundy

People: The Witches’ Market of La Paz
Although this next topic doesn’t necessarily focus on nutrition per se, in a way it is “health” related and certainly unique to La Paz, Bolivia. The Mercado de las Brujas or Witches’ Market is located on a cobblestone street in the old quarter of La Paz where those who still practice ancient Aymara traditions can come to visit a yatiri, or witch doctor, and purchase their wares. This oddity has unsurprisingly become a tourist attraction, and the shops make a significant portion of their revenue from curious foreigners stopping in for a peek. While the country’s population is overwhelmingly Catholic, remnants of the Aymara spiritual belief system have been passed on to modern society. Many Bolivians continue to pay homage to the goddess Pachamama, or “Earth Mother,” and will honor her with despachos (burnt offerings) and prayers for health, happiness, and prosperity.
The market as a whole was smaller than I expected, but each shop overflowed with all manner of peculiar items ranging from mystical trinkets and alluring potions to downright macabre sacrificial animals and curse candles. Occult items one may purchase in the market also include: medicinal plants, folk remedies, native herbs and seeds, amulets, totems, talismans, crystals and gemstones, soapstone figurines, sugar offerings representing their desired outcomes, aphrodisiac formulas, perfumes and incenses, beauty powders, naked ceramic couples for sex life and fertility, owl feathers, and dried animals. Desiccated insects, turtles, starfish, frogs, and armadillos were among them, and I later learned that apparently frogs are believed to bring money, especially with a cigarette placed in its mouth, and armadillos prevent thieves from entering a home. By far the most prevalent sacrificial carcass, however, were the countless llama fetuses on display.
While decidedly not vegetarian in practice, llama offerings are a fascinating part of Bolivian culture from an anthropological standpoint. Llama fetuses that are generally the result of natural miscarriages are collected by the witch doctors from the high Andean desert. Their primary purpose is to serve as a cha’lla (offering) in traditional ceremonies where they are buried under the foundation of most Bolivian homes. The Witches’ Market is a major supplier of the fetuses, though only poorer Bolivians opt to use them, as the wealthy are expected to sacrifice a living llama if they can afford to do it. The sight of the fetuses in various stages of development from tiny and shriveled to large and furry creatures was somewhat disturbing, and given the nature of this blog I’ve abstained from including pictures of this part of the market.
The market also serves as a place to acquire spells or spiritual advice from the witches, medicine women, folk doctors, astrologers, fortune-tellers, and sorcerers that circulate the area. Sacred white and black magic is performed to treat ailments, exact revenge, attract wealth, grant success, punish oppressors, and bring about health, love, intelligence, happiness, longevity or protection by calling upon the Aymara spirit world. Copious amounts of pre-mixed potions are available in small bottles of colorful liquid or takeaway boxes for the spell-caster on the go, and black candles morbidly shaped into skulls, coffins, and penises are prescribed for dark magic curses. Another prominent feature is ceramic statues of Ekeko, the chubby Andean god of good fortune and plenty. Bolivians give these statues to each other and cover them with miniature representations of the things they hope to acquire, such as dollar bills, diplomas, or minibuses, and then place a lit cigarette in his mouth for good luck.

K’aresh
The planet of K’aresh has always been a desert planet with only a few big, lush oasis, in which different factions of the Ethereal made their home. The Ethereals lived as nomads and traders between the cities on the one, big continent of K’aresh, making their living.
With such few resources, it’s a wonder the Ethereals didn’t fight over them, but instead pooled their resources into developing technology to improve their life in the desert. Even the trade princes willingly gave their part to fund the researches. But it was this technology and knowledge, which ultimately saved the race of the Ethereals, preserving the essence of their beings on the journey through the Twisting Nether, even though their bodies were lost.
The influence of their life on the planet is still found in the look of the Ethereals culture: evidently an Arabic inspired look, drawing on colors and patterns from the orient and desert life.
3 Large Eco-Domes visibly mark the efforts of the Protectorate to rebuild their home planet. There are more, smaller stations out there, but these are the main hubs, connected by tunnels to easily travel in between for all living things.
The Protectorate has restored the royal palace of the Ethereal (previously belonging to the Ethereum) to its former glory and uses it as headquarter. Players will arrive here. It is basically a large palace with surrounding gardens. There are big bathhouses on the grounds, as well as temporary Ethereal housing. It feels like a dream landscape from one thousand and one nights.

Against All Odds-book 2 of the Novels of Shannon/ chapter 2 part 2
Dave woke up sick, scared, and soaked in cold sweat. Thoughts of the conversation kept running through his head making nightmares of whom, and what, Shannon was. Childhood events added to it. He crawled out of the tent hoping for a fire, trying to shake the dream with motion or activity.
The fire was down to embers, but Kaava had gathered enough wood to build it back up and keep it going all night. Shannon was likely to have gathered more for the sake of the others. As much as the man hated fire, he always provided the wood for others to keep it going. Dave took his time building it up before he set to walking about the ruins. He needed to think and move.
He hadn’t gone far when he found tracks through the new snow illuminated by the twilight glow of the two moons. He followed them for lack of anything else to do. They led him along a street, or what seemed to be one, and down a flight of stairs, and through an arched gateway that entered into a yard below. He nearly shouted when Theo stepped from the back side of the arch into the opening, startling Dave and his already short nerves.
“Very neat place,” Theo said with the light in his eyes of a child in a toy store. “Can’t sleep?” he added.
“No… restless dreams. I think Shannon likes to make sure I have bad nights now and then.”
