The Jeweled Face—Then and Now: From Salomè to Givenchy, the Seduction of Face Jewelry

       Veruschka in Salome, 1972
According to our feeds, the Instaworld shares our obsession with Givenchy’s jeweled faces. Whether you’re into them or not, there is no denying this was the season’s boldest beauty statement yet. Pat McGraths hybrid beauty assemblage incorporated references to the mouche—a face patch popular in the 1800s—punk piercings, Indian bridal jewelry, and even mustaches. Whether or not this image of Veruschka was in the mix, it is apt in more ways than one. It’s an outtake from Carmelo Bene’s 1972 flick Salomè (Donyale Luna played the lead), about a seductress: a type Riccardo Tiscis designs fit to a T.
