For the third and final magazine analysis, I chose The Aglaia, which is a quarterly publication for Phi Mu Fraternity’s members and alumnae. I chose this magazine because it’s the main example I could think of since I’m part of the organization and receive the magazine in the mail.
Audience-
Audience-
- Demographics = American women all across the states who are members or alumnae of Phi Mu Fraternity, typical age is anywhere from 18+, and is college educated
- Psychographics = involved in sorority/campus life, interested in leadership and community service
- The award-winning national magazine of Phi Mu Fraternity, published quarterly since 1907
- To update its members and alumnae throughout the US about what is currently going on within the fraternity at a local and national level (special events, awards/nominations, pictures, news, etc.)
- Content is always ordered in 4 main sections = Feature, News & Events, Phi Mu Foundation, and In Every Issue
- The most important piece is usually in the very beginning in the features section to immediately grab the reader’s interest up front (ex: Charting the Course: the 53rd National Convention Makes Phi Mu History)
- News & Events is usually the bulk of the magazine
- The end parts of the magazine are more fun and carefree little pieces (ex: quatrefoil spotting of architecture or Phi Mu members holding up the hand sign of the fraternity, which is a quatrefoil shape)
- Phi Mu Fraternity owns the magazine
- Most of the people on staff were once members of the organization; the contributors page says there are 8 people involved including Director of Communications, Communications Coordinator, Executive Director, Communications Committee, Design staff, and Contributing Writers)
- The Director of Communications/Editor is Jackie Gilpin Isaacson
- 64 pages of the magazine
- 38 pages of content and 26 pages of advertising for Carnation Collection at the end of the magazine (Phi Mu design, apparel, school supplies, and jewelry to buy)
- Overall follows the editorial philosophy and formula very well by only having content and pictures that relate to the target audience’s interests
- Also follows the organization well, the feature story focused on different aspects of the national convention (what happened, who went, why it was beneficial)
- News & Events updates ex: “History Made: Focusing on the Future of Phi Mu” (story that explains how the national convention led to policy governance and implementing change)
- News & Events updates ex: “Phi Mu’s Chapter Consultants” (story on what this position does within the fraternity and introduced the current/new leaders)
- Phi Mu Foundation updates ex: “Sisters Helping Sisters at the 2014 Phi Mu Convention” (
- In Every Issue updates ex: “Collegiate Pride” (highlighted each of the 120+ chapters on one significant event they held this past semester)
- Bright pink colors on the front cover and as bold headings throughout the magazine, which is one of the fraternity’s signature colors (rose and white)
- Clean, easy to follow, simple grid style of pictures
- Had a pink quatrefoil in the top headers, which is the fraternity’s signature shape (related the design back to the organization)
